New data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) covering England and Wales shows that deaths from drug poisonings in 2018 were at the highest rate since records began in 1993 and 16% higher than 2017. Last year there were 4,359 drug-related deaths in England and Wales, 51% of which involved an opiate.

New STI data for England in 2018 show a 5% increase in STI diagnoses since 2017, with an especially worrying increase in gonorrhoea diagnoses of 26% and a 5% increase in syphilis diagnoses.

In response to the proposal that the number of places on the PrEP Impact Trial be doubled (a 100% increase), London Councils announced today that they have agreed to accept 60% of the additional PrEP places. This contrasts with the majority of commissioners outside London who have accepted all of the places which were offered.

Today Lloyd Russell-Moyle MP has become the first MP to disclose thier HIV status the House.

Deborah Gold, Chief Executive of NAT (National AIDS Trust) said: “Lloyd has the full support of NAT in telling the public that he is living with HIV. Although no one is obliged to be open about their status, and it isn’t always an easy decision, the same stigma that makes it hard to say you have HIV, is a stigma that is gradually eroded by people being open and proud.
