New HIV data shows UK is a global leader in response to the epidemic

New data released today by Public Health England (PHE) shows astonishing progress towards the UN’s targets for combatting and containing the HIV epidemic. In particular, the 90-90-90 targets are exceeded. This positions the UK as a global leader in the response to HIV.

90-90-90 refers to the global aim by 2020 to have over 90% of those with HIV diagnosed and aware of their condition, 90% of those diagnosed on the necessary antiretroviral treatment, and 90% of those treated to have achieved viral suppression.

In today’s ‘Diana, Princess of Wales Lecture on HIV’, Sir Elton John called for renewed global action on HIV. This afternoon’s landmark lecture is the latest in a series launched by NAT (National AIDS Trust) in memory of their late patron, Princess Diana, and was delivered in partnership with the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

The lecture was delivered in front of an audience of politicians, health workers, journalists, civil society leaders, celebrities and people living with HIV, at the Institut Français, in London.

The Civil Aviation Authority have announced changes to their hitherto outdated rules on HIV. They are issuing initial Class 1 Medical certificates (with a restriction to multi-pilot operations) to applicants wishing to become commercial pilots. The CAA have also appealed to EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) so that further progressive rulemaking activity can occur and a permanent change to the regulations will mean there are no barriers for those living with HIV to work as commercial pilots.

NAT (National AIDS Trust) has issued new guidelines to boost efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat blood-borne viruses (BBVs) in prisons. Prevalence of BBVs such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are four times higher amongst people in prisons than in the general population. Hepatitis accounts for 93% of viral infections reported in prisons.
