Yusef Azad, Director of Policy and Campaigns, NAT (National AIDS Trust) said: "Hate crime is an issue for people with HIV – it may be rare but we hear of vicious disclosure of someone’s HIV status on social media, or vandalism and graffiti against someone’s property, or verbal or physical assault simply because someone is living with this condition.

Today NAT (National AIDS Trust) publishes a new guide for people in England living with HIV, explaining how the NHS handles, stores and shares their personal confidential health information. The short booklet also explains patients’ rights in relation to their records and advice on how to raise questions or concerns.

NAT is extremely disappointed to hear that a Home Office review of the asylum support system has found that there is no need to make any increase on the support currently provided to destitute asylum seekers. Insufficient asylum support is one of the key drivers of extreme poverty amongst people living with HIV in the UK. Since 2010, NAT has been calling on the Government to increase asylum support rates to be equivalent to the rate of Income Support.

A coalition of LGBTI (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans Intersex) organisations and campaigners have written an open letter to political leaders in the UK, highlighting the urgent need to make Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) statutory in all schools – as well as appropriate for LGBTI young people.

Today (6 October) Public Health England (PHE) releases its 2013 HIV statistics, showing the number of people who are receiving HIV care is now 81,512, up from 77,590 in 2012. New HIV diagnoses have seen a slight decline over the past year – however amongst young gay men and over 50s they continue to rise.
