PEP prescribed outside of clinical guidlelines perpetuates HIV myths, says NAT

A new study from Germany has shown that over 10% of people given PEP (post-exposure prophylaxsis, a course of pills to prevent HIV directly after potential infection has occurred) were prescribed the drug outside of medical guidelines, often for emotional reassurance.

We know that the same thing occurs in the UK.

Saturday October 13 is one year since the first clinic opened in the PrEP Impact trial (13 October 2017), a three-year trial which aimed to provide the HIV prevention drug PrEP to 10,000 people. The number of places on the trial was determined on the basis of anticipated demand but this number proved to be a sizeable underestimate. By the end of March 2018 22 clinics had filled all their allocated places for gay and bisexual men. As a result men in need of PrEP were being turned away.

The Chair of the Health Committee, Dr Sarah Wollaston MP, wrote today to the Chief Executive of NHS Digital calling for a suspension to the practice of providing addresses of migrants to the immigration authorities.

NAT (National AIDS Trust) has been campaigning for an end to this practice since it came to light in 2014.
