Blood donation rules to be updated to remove discriminatory criteria

Today the Department of Health and Social Care have confirmed that the question; ‘In the last three months, have you had sex with someone who may ever have had sex in parts of the world where HIV/AIDS is very common’, will finally be removed from blood donor screening forms. The change brings England in line with Scotland and Wales who have also recently removed such a screening criteria, following updated scientific guidance and expert evidence.

NAT (National AIDS Trust) has released a symbolic video with the help of community dance groups as part of its Rock the Ribbon Together campaign to mark World AIDS Day (1 December 2019).

The Rock the Ribbon Together campaign urges people to stand in solidarity with people living with HIV, raise awareness and donations, challenge stigma, and end loneliness and isolation.

Today (8 November 2019) former Wales rugby captain Gareth Thomas – who revealed he’s living with HIV in September – has been announced as a commissioner on the first ever HIV Commission. His new role will see him playing a key part in helping to end HIV transmissions in England over the next decade.

NHS England have announced five steps towards better access to the HIV prevention drug PrEP, including recommending removing the capped number of places on the ongoing IMPACT Trial. This follows a meeting yesterday between Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, NAT (National AIDS Trust), Terrence Higgins Trust, and PrEPster.

NHS England announced today that whilst the PrEP Impact trial will double the number of places on the trial in clinics outside London, local authority commissioners in London are still considering what proportion of the proposed additional places they wish to accept. Fifty per cent of PrEP Impact Trial places are for London clinics.

At least 11 of the 23 London clinics currently have no places available for gay and bisexual men. The result is men needing PrEP are being turned away. Some will go on to acquire HIV as a result.
