National AIDS Trust responds the publication of the second independent review of PIP

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has today published the second of two planned independent reviews of the implementation of Personal Independence Payment (PIP). The Review was lead by Paul Gray CB (the Gray Review).

NAT submitted evidence to the independent review, based on our research into the experiences of people living with HIV who have been assessed for PIP.

In my last blog I welcomed PHE’s new tender for a national HIV prevention programme. The annual value of the programme is £1.2 million, the same as the value for HIV Prevention England in 2015/16. In the current context of significant cuts to the public health budget announced by the Chancellor in his Spending Review, to maintain the programme’s value is an achievement, and absolutely necessary given experts agree that HIV incidence is increasing.

Young gay men need same level of sex and relationships education as their heterosexual peers.

In response to Sir Alasdair Macdonald’s Independent Review of the proposal to make PSHE statutory Deborah Jack, Chief Executive of NAT, comments:

Independent review of AIDS Support Grant shows areas for improvement

NAT (National AIDS Trust) has today announced the findings from its independent review of the AIDS Support Grant. The Grant, worth £21.8million in 2009/10, is a ring-fenced fund distributed to local authorities to spend specifically on the social care needs of people living with HIV. The independent review, the first ever of the Grant, identified examples of good practice and makes recommendations for local authorities about how use of the Grant can be improved in the future.
