National AIDS Trust response to Public Health England’s National HIV self-sampling service report.

Danny Beales, Head of Policy and Campaigns at National AIDS Trust, said:

“Public Health England’s new report makes it clear that a home HIV self-sampling service is a cost-effective and successful way of reaching communities most at risk of acquiring HIV. This is shown by 1 in 4 of the kits tested being from someone who said it was their first HIV test.

“It is vital sexual health services are funded to develop accessible and low costs ways for people to find out their HIV status if England wants to end new HIV transmissions by 2030.

“Home HIV self-sampling services are usually only available to people in areas where local authorities have agreed to fund access. Public Health England currently funds access nationally during set periods like National HIV Testing Week.

“The Government and local authorities need to ensure that everyone across the country has access to online accessible home HIV testing all year round – not just for a few weeks a year.”
