Lord Darzi's report highlights the vital need to increase funding to sexual health services
On 12 September 2024, the Department of Health and Social Care published Lord Darzi's Independent investigation of the NHS in England.
Robbie Currie, Chief Executive of National AIDS Trust, said: “Lord Darzi’s report on the state of the NHS shows that sexual health services have been one of most affected by budget cuts – with a reported £171 million reduction from 2016/17 to 2022/23.
“Our sexual health services are being stretched toward breaking point and with challenges including mpox and rising STI rates, capacity to tackle new HIV transmissions continues to be limited.
“We know how to end new HIV transmissions by 2030, and the NHS is crucial to achieve this. Labour’s election manifesto rightly stated that “prevention is always better and cheaper than a cure,” emphasising the need to fund HIV prevention programmes that reach everyone. Without proper funding, the NHS will also be unable to provide essential wraparound services, like mental health care and peer support, to allow people to live well with HIV.”
“Without substantial investment and forward-thinking approach to HIV prevention and HIV care, we risk reversing any progress we've made and putting people’s health at greater risk.”
