HIV Prevention Pilot brings new hope for PrEP in Northern Ireland
The Northern Ireland Department of Health has announced a new £450K HIV Prevention Pilot to be funded through the Health Transformation Fund. Yusef Azad, Director of Strategy at NAT (National AIDS Trust), said:
“NAT welcomes the announcement that Northern Ireland will be introducing an HIV Prevention Pilot as well as early indications that this will include some element of PrEP provision. PrEP is an essential component to any HIV prevention strategy and people at risk of HIV have a right to access this highly effective option. Currently Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK where there is no access to PrEP on the NHS. With recent increases in HIV diagnoses in Northern Ireland, this is long overdue. We look forward to more details from the Department of Health on their plans for this pilot.”
