MenAtPlay - Play safe campaign
What's the link between MenAtPlay and NAT?
MenAtPlay supports NAT because of the work we're doing to stop the spread of HIV and improve the quality of life of people living with HIV.
NAT works with MenAtPlay because they take a responsible approach to promoting safer sex. Their commitment to promoting safer sex and providing information about HIV to their users and showing that safer sex can still be sexy.
For gay and bisexual men, this is really important:
- 1 in 20 gay men in the UK have HIV. This rises to 1 in 10 in London and 1 in 8 in Brighton.
- Over a quarter of gay men with HIV don't know that they're infected.
- Only just over half of gay men in the UK have ever had an HIV test - compared to over 85% in Australia.
- Over 40% of gay men with HIV are diagnosed late (after the point at which they should have started treatment). This not only has a serious impact on their health but also means it is more likely they will have infected others.

NAT - the UK's leading HIV charity
About NAT
NAT is the UK's leading charity dedicating to transforming society's response to HIV.
We research the issues that affect people living with HIV in UK. We work to make sure that policy and decisions made about HIV are based on evidence.
We educate teachers, employers, lawyers, the police, healthcare workers and other professionals. We provide resources to help them understand HIV and to ensure they do not discriminate against people with HIV.
We engage with journalists and schools. We make sure the information they give out is accurate and does not stigmatise people with HIV.
We influence parliamentarians and government officials at a local and national level. We advocate for them to consider the needs of people living with HIV when making policies and laws, and to ensure they invest in HIV prevention care and support.

Where is my money going?
NAT is an independent charity. We receive only limited funds from the Government and this is decreasing every year. We rely on donations and the generosity of our supporters to continue our work. While many other charities in the UK have widened their remits to sexual health, NAT remains focused on HIV.
80 pence in every pound donated goes directly to our core policy work.
The income we receive from your subscription to MenAtPlay is helping us to shape attitudes, challenge injustice and change lives.
How are we helping?
We work on a range of issues, these are just three recent examples of our work.
Shaping attitudes - We are campaigning for effective sex and relationships education (SRE) in schools. We succeeded in getting over 100MPs to sign our petition about the importance of HIV awareness for young gay men. We also got both HIV and same-sex relationships explicitly included in Government guidance about SRE.
Challenging injustice - We have been campaigning for a review of the blood donor ban for gay men. We were the first HIV charity to speak out on this issue and have convinced the Safety Advisory Committee to review their restrictions on blood donors.
Changing Lives - We conducted research into the experiences of HIV positive gay men in the workplace. We found that although the health effects of HIV are having little impact, stigma and discrimination are barriers. Our findings helped to secure an amendment to the new Equality Act which makes it illegal for employers to ask questions about disability and long term conditions before an offer of a job is made.
