Sustained Effort Needed to Develop Microbicides

Results of microbicide trial were announced today.

The results of the MDP301 trial of PRO2000 gel were announced today.  This gel was being developed as a possible microbicide to protect women from HIV infection during sex.  The results revealed that PRO2000 was safe but did not provide protection against HIV.

On Human Rights Day NAT Condemns Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill

The British Government must put pressure on the Government of Uganda directly

NAT is deeply concerned about the Anti-Homosexuality Bill introduced by the Ugandan Parliament in October 2009. The Bill calls for life sentences for practising homosexuals and the death penalty for homosexuals with HIV infection.

Over 1 in 1,000 people living with HIV in the UK

New figures out today from the Health Protection Agency

New figures released today by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show there were 83,000 people living with HIV in the UK at the end of 2008. This is equivalent to over 1 in 1,000 people with HIV in the UK. Over a quarter (27 per cent) of people were estimated to be unaware of their HIV infection.

Ed Balls confirmed today that personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE education) including sex and relationships education, will be made compulsory in schools from September 2011.

NAT Welcomes Lifting of US Travel Ban

President Barack Obama has announced that the 22 year old ban on allowing people living with HIV into the United States will be lifted.  HIV infection will be officially removed from the definition of communicable diseases of public health significance as of January 1st, 2010.

NAT's launches new report 'Working with HIV'

Lessons for employers after first major survey of people living with HIV at work

The findings of the first major piece of research to be conducted into the working experiences of people living with HIV have been revealed by NAT (National AIDS Trust). The research shows that the health effects of HIV are having little impact on people’s ability to work thanks to improvements in treatment, however stigma surrounding HIV still creates barriers in the workplace.

NAT Reveals Findings of AIDS Support Grant Review

Independent review of AIDS Support Grant shows areas for improvement

NAT (National AIDS Trust) has today announced the findings from its independent review of the AIDS Support Grant. The Grant, worth £21.8million in 2009/10, is a ring-fenced fund distributed to local authorities to spend specifically on the social care needs of people living with HIV. The independent review, the first ever of the Grant, identified examples of good practice and makes recommendations for local authorities about how use of the Grant can be improved in the future.

Success of Petition to End HIV Discrimination in Schools

Over 1500 people signed up to National AIDS Trust’s (NAT) petition calling on the Government to ensure that no child or teacher is discriminated against in school because of their HIV status. After two years of campaigning this petition, which secured hundreds of supporters, played a key role in making the Government take notice. In response to the petition, the Government provided a detailed response and agreed to work with NAT on the issue.

New Guidance for Housing Officers on HIV

NAT and Shelter set new approach for assessing housing need

NAT (National AIDS Trust) has today launched a guide about HIV for housing officers. The guidance, produced in partnership with Shelter, follows a report1 in January which revealed evidence of poor practice in housing provision for people living with HIV. Research shows inappropriate housing has a detrimental effect on the health of someone living with HIV, with potentially life-threatening consequences.

NAT welcomes new protections from HIV-related hate crime in Scotland

NAT welcomes the Offence (Aggravation by Prejudice) (Scotland) Bill that will ensure that for the first time people living with HIV in Scotland are protected from HIV related hate crime. Discrimination by Association or Perception to be Outlawed

NAT welcomes the Government's decision to ban discrimination based on association or perception.

The Government's announcement, given in a written statement by the Minister for Women and Equality Harriet Harman MP, means that for the first time people perceived to be, or associated with, someone who is HIV positive will be protected from discrimination. The change will be made in the new Equality Bill which is expected to be introduced to Parliament later this month. Read the full article

Court of Appeal Judgment Leaves Refused Asylum Seekers without a Right to Free Healthcare

Today the Court of Appeal judgment overturned the decision of the High Court that refused asylum seekers should be able to access free NHS care whilst in the UK. In particular, the Court of Appeal ruled that refused asylum seekers were not ‘ordinarily resident’ for the purposes of the law. Read the full article

Natasha Richardson was an NAT ambassador for over 10 years. Having been personally affected by HIV she worked hard to raise awareness of HIV in the UK and around the world. She was always supportive of our work and very passionate in her commitment to tackle HIV discrimination. She will be greatly missed.”

Housing Professionals Failing People with HIV

NAT report highlights the necessity of access to adequate housing for people with HIV

A report released today by NAT (National AIDS Trust), in partnership with Shelter, reveals evidence of poor practice in housing provision for people living with HIV. HIV and Housing finds people living with HIV are struggling to cope with the impact of poor housing and many housing professionals have little understanding of HIV and remain unaware of the effect poor housing can have on the lives of people living with HIV. In some cases outright discrimination was identified.
