This page is for anyone who's responsible for managing or manning telephone advice lines and have callers who may need information, help or advice relating to HIV.
In 2004 a major conference of people living with HIV identified the need for clear, comprehensive, consistent and up to date information on the risks of HIV transmission in a variety of contexts.
We therefore decided to undertake a brief assessment of the sort of information and advice that is available from telephone advice lines on risks of transmission of HIV through sex.
As we expected, we found that advice lines were consistent in their promotion of condom use to prevent the transmission of HIV. However, this project identified a number of areas on which advisers gave varying advice or callers were left unclear about the likely risk of HIV being transmitted.
A full report of our review, explaining the approach we took, our findings and our recommendations is available for download here.
The recommendations begin on page 16 of the report.
