World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day, was the first international health day, held in London in 1988 by a summit of health ministers who realised that a united global effort was required to halt the spread of HIV.

World AIDS Day takes place every year on 1 December

The aim of World AIDS Day is to raise awareness about HIV in order to create a more AIDS aware society. In 2006 the theme was You, Me, Us - we can prevent the spread of HIV and end prejudice.

What do we on World AIDS Day?

The National AIDS Trust co-ordinates the UK campaign. We:

  • Set the national theme
  • Distribute World AIDS Day campaign materials to a broad range of individuals and organisations throughout the UK
  • Encourage activities and involvement from schools, companies and the general public
  • Raise awareness through poster campaigns and press coverage
  • Develop and manage the World AIDS Day website as a key information resource on HIV and World AIDS Day
  • Form partnerships with companies to recognise and promote the day.
