Most affected by HIV
Anybody can become infected with HIV, but some groups in the UK have a higher proportion of people living with HIV than others.
The groups most affected by HIV in the UK are:
- Gay and bisexual men – 42% of people living with HIV in the UK are men who have sex with men
- Black African women and men – 35% of people living with HIV are black African, many of whom are migrants
- Black Caribbean men and women – Only 1% of the UK population are black Caribbean but this group represents 3% of people living with HIV.
- Prisoners – Prisoners are disproportionately affected by both HIV and hepatitis B and C.
- Injecting drug users – Around 2% of people living with HIV in the UK are injecting drug users (IDUs).
