Partnerships

The National AIDS Trust works in partnership with a diverse range of organisations, in order to represent the needs and views of people living with HIV.

AIDS Action Europe

AIDS Action Europe (AAE) was launched in 2004 as a pan-European partnership on HIV and AIDS.

It has three key objectives:

  • To address the rise of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Western Europe
  • To support an effective response to HIV and AIDS in Central and Eastern Europe
  • To advocate for an increase in resources for the global epidemic

The National AIDS Trust was instrumental in establishing AIDS Action Europe and is a member of the AIDS Action Europe steering committee. AIDS Action Europe is the European partner of ICASO, the International Council of AIDS Service Organisations.

Civil Society Forum

The National AIDS Trust is the UK representative on the European Union HIV/AIDS Civil Society Forum.

The Forum was set up by the European Commission in 2005 and consists of 30 organisations from across the European Union and neighbouring countries. It works on a wide range of HIV issues.

The Forum assists NGOs in developing and implementing effective policies on HIV and in sharing information. It is also an informal advisory body to the European Think Tank on HIV/AIDS, a working group that includes the European Commission, EU member states and accession countries. The European Think Tank on HIV/AIDS plays an important role in defining priorities for HIV and AIDS policy within the European Union and its neighbouring countries.

The EHRC

The Equality and Human Rights Commission was launched on 1 October 2007, taking on the role and functions of the Commission for Racial Equality, the Disability Rights Commission and the Equal Opportunities Commission, with new responsibilities for age, sexual orientation, religion and belief and human rights. The new commission is working to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and to build good relations, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society.

NAT is committed to working closely with the EHRC, particularly on our work around employment, human rights and discrimination.

International AIDS Vaccine Initiative

NAT is the country partner of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) in the UK.

IAVI is a global not-for-profit organisation working to speed the search for a vaccine to prevent HIV infection and AIDS. Founded in 1996 and operational in 23 countries, IAVI and its network of partners research and develop vaccine candidates. IAVI also advocates for a vaccine to be a global priority and works to assure that a future vaccine will be accessible to all who need it.

NAT is committed to raising awareness and securing support for the development of an effective vaccine. NAT advocates for adequate funding, increased private sector involvement and capacity building in developing countries, to enable effective vaccine research and development.

International Partnership for Microbicides

NAT is a key collaborator of the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) in the UK.

IPM was established in 2002 to accelerate the discovery, development and accessibility of microbicides to prevent transmission of HIV. The organisation's goal is to deliver a safe and effective microbicide for women in developing countries as soon as possible.

NAT raises awareness of microbicides among opinion formers and decision makers in the UK to secure the funding and support necessary for the early development of a safe and effective microbicide.

Sex Education Forum

NAT is a member of the Sex Education Forum (SEF), which is hosted by the National Children's Bureau (NCB). SEF is the national authority on sex and relationships education (SRE). The Forum believes that good quality SRE is an entitlement for all children and young people and is working with its 48 members - religious, children's, parent, governors, health and education organisations - towards this end.

UK Campaign for Microbicides

The UK Campaign for Microbicides was established in September 2002 as a coalition of British-based non-government organisations working together towards the widespread global access and use of microbicides for the prevention of HIV.

The Campaign has three goals:

  • To raise awareness and mobilise political support for increased funding for microbicide research and development;
  • To create a supportive policy environment for timely development and introduction of new prevention technologies which ensures their global accessibility and use;
  • To ensure that as science proceeds, the public interest is protected and the rights and interests of trial participants, users and communities are fully represented and respected.

The National AIDS Trust participates on the steering group and is an active member of the campaign.

UK Consortium on AIDS and International Development

NAT is a member of the UK Consortium on AIDS and International Development, a group of more than 80 UK-based organisations that work together to understand and develop effective approaches to the problems created by the HIV epidemic in developing countries.

They do this through information exchange, advocacy and campaigning.  NAT is a long-term supporter of the Consortium's campaign on access to universal HIV treatment.

The Consortium’s vision is to promote an effective global response to HIV and AIDS that contributes to sustainable development. Its mission is to encourage, initiate and support collaborative action by civil society to contribute to and influence the global response to HIV and AIDS.
